Does Putlocker still exist?
The original Putlocker has been gone since late 2016, after a UK court ordered providers to block it and its main domain went dark. “Putlocker” today is a name that other sites use: in our test, six domains load one of those sites, six block us or break, and nine are parked or for sale, including the old putlocker.is.
In 2016 Putlocker ranked among the 250 most visited sites in the world. Ten years later its name still gets close to a million searches a month, and the top questions are not about domains but about replacements: “putlocker alternative”, “sites like putlocker” and “best putlocker alternatives” add up to about 24,000 searches. Below are the sites that load now, then the legal options, then the full domain test.

Recommended VPNs against rogue ads and fake sites
Before you open any address in the table above, know that most of them run on aggressive ad networks. Pick by risk: Proton VPN Plus to filter ad, tracker and malware domains on all your devices, TV included; NordVPN to get warnings about fraudulent and phishing sites. A VPN also encrypts your connection on public Wi-Fi.
What a VPN doesn’t do
Proton VPN Plus
- NetShield blocks ad, tracker and malware domains (default level), included in VPN Plus.
- On Android TV, a single NetShield toggle blocks ads and trackers.
- Up to 10 devices on one subscription: PC, phone and TV.
NordVPN
- Scam, phishing and malware protection blocks malicious URLs and flags fraudulent sites.
- On Windows and macOS it also blocks ads and trackers; on Android and iOS only scam and phishing protection is available.
- Up to 10 devices on one subscription.

Is Putlocker safe in 2026?
Numbered and “official” names
- putlocker9.cv and putlocker.lol both call themselves official; neither can be tied to the original team.
- A number in the name (3, 7, 9, 21) says nothing about who runs it.
- A copy can change owner or domain at any time.
Block pages and bot checks
- The most-clicked “putlocker” result refused our request outright.
- We cannot see what it shows other visitors, so it counts as blocked, not working.
- Do not solve a check that asks you to paste or run anything.
Pop-ups and fake players
- Free movie sites like these usually earn from pop-unders, redirects and fake “HD player” downloads.
- Close any page that asks you to allow notifications.
- A VPN with an ad and malware filter blocks some of them: see our 2 recommended VPNs.
Is Putlocker legal?
- No: it streamed films without licenses, which is why UK providers had to block it.
- The sites using its name stream without licenses too.
- Rights holders mostly go after operators, not viewers.
Putlocker questions people ask
Our method
- Checked on by OwoZhero for NAT Checker.
- The domain list comes from Similarweb’s first 1,000 “putlocker” keywords: exact domains, numbered names and the site that wins the clicks for each search.
- Domains that answered blank were tried a second time; those that failed then are marked “Unstable”.
- We did not bypass bot checks or play any video. The test is repeated monthly.
