Xbox VPNs: The 2 Best Picks, How to Connect and What They Fix
Xbox has no VPN app, so the VPN runs on your router or computer. See the 2 best Xbox VPNs, real prices, setup steps and what they do for Strict NAT.
Quick Answer
PureVPN is the best Xbox VPN for most players: its port forwarding add-on opens the ports Xbox uses, for $3.48 a month with the plan on 2 years. Proton VPN gives you Moderate NAT from $2.49 a month. Xbox has no VPN app, so either one runs on your router or computer and your console connects through it.
Strict NAT leaves you able to play only with people on Open NAT, and you can’t host. If your internet provider or dorm network is the reason, nothing on your console will change that. A VPN with the right NAT option can, and because Xbox has no VPN app, it runs on your router or computer. Xbox One, Series X and Series S all connect the same way.
The 2 Best VPNs for Xbox in 2026
Xbox’s own advice is that you need Open NAT, so PureVPN comes first: it can open the ports. Proton VPN is the pick for Moderate NAT and privacy.

What an Xbox VPN Fixes, Job by Job
Find what you’re trying to do. The last column shows the VPN that fits it.
| Your job | Does a VPN fix it? | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| Strict or Moderate NAT you can’t fix at home | Yes, when your line is the block, such as CGNAT or a dorm network. You need a VPN with a NAT option, because a regular connection usually stays Strict. More on the types in our Xbox NAT type guide and on CGNAT and gaming. | PureVPN |
| Party chat you can’t hear, games you can’t join or host | Often. Xbox ties these to your NAT type, so a better NAT type is the fix to go for. | PureVPN or Proton VPN |
| Keeping your home IP away from other players | Yes. Traffic through the VPN shows the VPN’s address instead of yours, which also makes your home line a harder target for DDoS attacks. Xbox allows a VPN for privacy while gaming. | Proton VPN or PureVPN |
| Matching with other regions or bot lobbies | Worth testing, game by game. Matchmaking looks at more than your IP. See Call of Duty bot lobbies. | PureVPN or Proton VPN |
| Lag and packet loss | Only if your provider’s route or throttling is the cause. Check first with our Xbox packet loss guide. | PureVPN or Proton VPN, tested on your line |
| Streaming apps on your Xbox | Worth testing, through a VPN router. Services change their blocks, so try yours during the refund window. See the best VPN for streaming. | Proton VPN or PureVPN |
Xbox VPN NAT Types: What Each One Gets You
On a VPN, NAT happens on the VPN server, so the VPN’s settings matter more than your provider’s. Here’s what Xbox says each type means, and which VPN setup gets you there.
| NAT type | What Xbox says it means | VPN setup that gets you there |
|---|---|---|
| Open | You can play with people on any NAT type and host games | PureVPN with Port Forwarding |
| Moderate | You might not reach some players, and you normally won’t be chosen as host | Proton VPN with Moderate NAT on |
| Strict | You can only play with people on Open NAT, and you can’t host | Most VPN connections by default, including Proton’s until you change it |
| Unavailable | Party chat and some multiplayer games won’t connect | A router problem to fix first: see the fixes below |
PureVPN lists the ports Xbox uses as TCP 53, 80 and 3074, and UDP 53, 88, 500, 3074, 3544 and 4500, which fits within its 15 chosen ports. In our test on one phone, PureVPN with all ports open moved Symmetric NAT to Full Cone. Routers differ and no VPN can promise Open NAT on every setup, so run Test NAT type on your Xbox during the refund window.

How to Put a VPN on Xbox: 3 Ways
The console can’t run a VPN itself, so something else on your network does it. The Xbox then connects as it would to any network.
| Way | Best for | What you need | Which VPNs |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN router | Most players: always on, with guides from both picks | A router with a VPN client. Here’s the best VPN for a router, or a small VPN travel router next to your main one. | PureVPN and Proton VPN both have router guides |
| Sharing from a computer | Trying it out, with no new hardware | A computer that stays on, connected by Wi-Fi hotspot or Ethernet. It adds another network layer, so run the NAT test afterwards. | PureVPN lists laptop and desktop setups. Proton’s Windows sharing guide needs OpenVPN, which its protocol list now shows only on Linux, so use its Linux hotspot route |
| VPN app, for cloud gaming | Xbox Cloud Gaming away from the console | Nothing extra. The game streams to your phone, PC or browser, and the app runs there. | PureVPN and Proton VPN apps |
Using a VPN on Xbox without a PC? A VPN router is the only one of these ways that needs no computer.
What about Smart DNS? Some VPNs offer it as a console option. It can help streaming apps, but it doesn’t encrypt your traffic, change your IP or help your NAT type, so it can’t do the main jobs above.
Xbox Cloud Gaming With a VPN
Cloud gaming is the easy case, because the game streams to your phone, PC or browser, and the VPN app runs there. Choose a server close to you, since streaming suffers more from extra distance than downloads do. Cloud gaming is only offered in the regions Xbox supports, and Xbox’s purchase rules below still apply.
Xbox VPN Price: From $2.49 a Month
For about a dollar more a month, PureVPN’s total includes the add-on that opens your ports. These totals already include the VPN plan, so there’s nothing to add up.
| Plan | Price | Best NAT option |
|---|---|---|
| PureVPN with Port Forwarding, 2 years (our pick) | $3.48 a month ($93.96 for 27 months) | Built for Open NAT |
| PureVPN with Port Forwarding, 1 year | $4.89 a month ($58.68) | Built for Open NAT |
| Proton VPN Plus, 2 years | $2.49 a month ($59.76) | Moderate NAT |
US prices before tax, read at checkout on November 6, 2026, during Black Friday offers. Seasonal deals, when running, show on the cards above; PureVPN’s 5-year deal there is for the plan alone. After the first term, plans renew at each VPN’s regular rate. Refunds don’t cover renewals, crypto on PureVPN, or cash and bank transfer on Proton VPN.
Get Port Forwarding From $3.48 a MonthXbox “VPN Detected” Error: What Xbox Allows
Xbox publishes its own VPN policy. You can use a VPN for privacy or security while browsing or gaming. It draws the line at transactions.
| Xbox allows | Xbox doesn’t allow |
|---|---|
| A VPN for privacy while browsing or gaming | In some situations, masking your location while making purchases |
| Signing in securely on different networks | In some situations, redeeming region-locked content by masking your location |
| Playing with the VPN on, then turning it off to buy | Repeatedly switching regions for purchases or refunds |
If you see “VPN detected”, the purchase has to come from your account’s home region. Disconnect the VPN, confirm your region in your Microsoft account, and try again. Xbox says repeated attempts with location masking may bring action on your account, so make purchases with the VPN off and turn it back on to play.
How to Use a VPN on Xbox in 4 Steps
- Choose your VPN and plan. For PureVPN, choose the 2-year plan on the order page and add Port Forwarding. For Proton VPN, choose the Plus plan. Go to the 2 picks.
- Set the VPN up on your router. Follow your VPN’s guide for your router model. You need a router with a VPN client, such as OpenWrt, AsusWRT-Merlin or DD-WRT. Proton’s are in its router guides.
- Turn on the NAT option. On PureVPN, open the Member Area, choose Configure next to Port Forwarding and enable all ports or the Xbox ports, then forward them on the router from the VPN interface to your Xbox. On Proton VPN, turn on Moderate NAT when you create the WireGuard file, or add +nr to your OpenVPN username.
- Connect your Xbox and test it. Connect the Xbox to that router. Go to Profile & system, Settings, General, Network settings, then select Test NAT type and Test multiplayer connection.

Xbox VPN Not Working? 4 Quick Fixes
NAT still says Strict
On PureVPN, reconnect the router so the new ports apply, and check the forward points to your Xbox’s IP. On Proton VPN, check the file or username has Moderate NAT on. Xbox warns against mixing port forwarding, UPnP and DMZ, so use one.
Double NAT detected
Xbox’s fix is bridge mode on your gateway, so only one device does NAT. A VPN router placed behind your ISP’s router, or computer sharing, can add this layer.
NAT Unavailable or “Can’t get a Teredo IP”
Xbox points to your router’s settings for these errors. Update its firmware and restart your network, then rerun Test multiplayer connection.
Xbox won’t connect at all
Make sure the VPN is connected on the router or computer first, then switch server and restart the console. If you’re sharing from a computer, check its VPN app is still on.
