qBittorrent Stuck on Downloading Metadata: 8 Fixes That Work

Magnet links stuck on “Downloading metadata” mean qBittorrent can’t reach a peer. A control test that finds the cause, plus fixes for DHT, trackers, VPNs, firewalls and Docker.

Quick Answer

qBittorrent can’t reach a peer with the torrent’s file list. Test a legal Ubuntu torrent first: if it works, your magnet link is the problem. If not, turn on DHT and PeX, add trackers, check Tools → Options → Advanced → Network interface and use a VPN server that allows P2P. A .torrent file skips this step.

qBittorrent gets stuck on “Downloading metadata” when it can’t reach any peer who has the torrent’s file list. A magnet link contains little more than a hash, so the client has to find a peer first. The usual causes are a dead torrent, DHT being off, a wrong network interface or a VPN server that doesn’t allow P2P.

Start with the two-minute control test below. It shows whether the problem is the magnet link or your setup, so you don’t change settings that were never the problem. If your VPN is the cause, a free or non-P2P server won’t fix it. You’d need a server that allows torrent traffic.

How to Fix It: 8 Steps

  1. 1. Run a control test with a legal torrent

Download the official Ubuntu .torrent file, or use its magnet link. If it gets metadata and your magnet doesn’t, the problem is the magnet and not your setup.

  2. 2. Turn on DHT, PeX and Local Peer Discovery

Go to Tools → Options → BitTorrent. A magnet link with no tracker needs DHT to find anyone. Restart qBittorrent after changing this.

  3. 3. Add working trackers

Right-click the torrent, choose Edit trackers and add trackers from a source you trust, then choose Force reannounce. Don’t do this on a private tracker’s torrent.

  4. 4. Check the network interface

Go to Tools → Options → Advanced → Network interface. If it points to a VPN adapter that’s disconnected or has changed, nothing can connect. Choose the active VPN adapter, or Any interface while you test without a VPN.

  5. 5. Allow qBittorrent through the firewall

Windows Firewall or a security suite can block it after an update. Allow the app on the network profile you use.

  6. 6. Switch to a P2P VPN server

Some VPN servers block or limit BitTorrent. Connect to one that the provider marks for P2P.

    See VPNs with P2P servers
  7. 7. Try another network

Workplaces, campuses and some ISPs block BitTorrent. Test on a phone hotspot, keeping an eye on your data. If it works there, your usual network is the cause.

  8. 8. Update, then use the .torrent file

Install the latest qBittorrent. If you can get the .torrent file, it already contains the metadata, so this step is skipped entirely.

Stuck on Metadata With a VPN

When metadata works without the VPN but not with it, check these in order:

  • Interface: a reinstall or protocol change can rename the VPN adapter. Select it again in Advanced.
  • Server type: on Proton VPN, use a paid server marked ⇄. Proton lists P2P for paid plans only, so its free servers aren’t a fix. On NordVPN, use a P2P server.
  • Port: a forwarded port isn’t required for metadata, because your client can connect out. It helps later, when you need more peers.
  • Kill switch: if it’s active after a dropped tunnel, all traffic is blocked. Reconnect the VPN before you change anything else.
Keep your IP out of the swarm

VPNs That Work With qBittorrent

Without a VPN, every peer in the swarm can see your home IP, including on the torrent you’re fixing now. On a P2P server, they see the server’s IP instead, and you avoid servers that block torrent traffic. Use the refund window to run the Ubuntu control test.

P2P servers for qBittorrent

Proton VPN

Paid plans include dedicated P2P servers and one forwarded port. Bind qBittorrent to the Proton adapter, and transfers stop if the VPN disconnects.
  • P2P servers marked ⇄ on paid plans
  • One forwarded port for more peers later

PureVPN

A good second option if you want a listening port in qBittorrent that doesn’t change every time you reconnect.
  • Port forwarding add-on with ports you choose
  • Internet kill switch

If metadata arrives but the download then stops, that’s a different problem. See qBittorrent stalled or qBittorrent not connecting to peers.

Provider setups: Proton VPN, NordVPN and PIA.

Stuck on Metadata in Docker

Open a shell in the container and confirm that it has internet access through the tunnel. In the Web UI, check that the Network interface matches the one inside the container, often tun0 behind Gluetun. See the qBittorrent VPN Docker guide.

qBittorrent Downloading Metadata FAQ

A magnet link doesn’t include the torrent’s file list. qBittorrent must first get that information from a peer, and the status shows while it searches. The actual files haven’t started downloading yet.

There’s no fixed time, because it depends on how quickly qBittorrent finds a peer. A healthy torrent usually moves on quickly. If it hasn’t moved after several minutes, run the Ubuntu control test to see whether your setup is the problem.
