qBittorrent Stalled: Meaning and Fixes That Work

Find out why qBittorrent says Stalled, diagnose downloads stuck at 0% or 99.9%, and fix peer, disk, queue, VPN, firewall, or port problems in the right order.

Quick Answer

Stalled means qBittorrent is ready to transfer but currently has no useful peer connection: StalledDL for a download and StalledUP for a completed torrent. First test a healthy legal torrent. If only one torrent stalls, check its seeds, availability, trackers, and missing pieces. If every torrent stalls, check free disk space, queue and rate limits, the selected network interface, firewall, and listening port. Force Resume only bypasses queue limits; it cannot create seeds. If you would rather not troubleshoot router rules or CGNAT, use a VPN that explicitly includes port forwarding and enter its assigned port in qBittorrent. That can improve incoming reachability, but it cannot repair a dead swarm or disk error.

Diagnose Why qBittorrent Is Stalled

Choose the closest symptom. This separates a normal lack of peers from a setting that can stall every torrent.

Start here

Check whether the swarm can supply the first piece

Look at Seeds, Peers, Availability, and the Trackers tab. Zero seeds, availability below 1.000, or only failing trackers points to the torrent or peer-discovery path—not your disk and not automatically your port.

What Does Stalled Mean in qBittorrent?

The official qBittorrent WebUI API defines stalled states by the lack of established peer connections. The label describes current activity; it does not identify the cause by itself.

Ready to download, no peer connection

StalledDL

The torrent is in a downloading state, but qBittorrent has not made a connection that can transfer pieces right now.

Ready to seed, no peer connection

StalledUP

The torrent is complete and available for upload, but no peer connection is currently using it.

Waiting for an active slot

Queued

QueuedDL and QueuedUP are controlled by torrent queueing limits. Force Resume can bypass this limit; it does not solve Stalled by itself.

Storage or file access failed

Error

An Error status points toward disk space, permissions, a missing drive, or another file-system problem rather than peer availability.

Stalled is not the same as paused, queued, missing files, or an I/O error. Read the exact status and the Execution Log before applying a fix.

Can a VPN Fix qBittorrent Stalled?

Sometimes. A VPN with port forwarding can provide a reachable incoming path when CGNAT, campus Wi-Fi, mobile internet, or an inaccessible router blocks ordinary forwarding. Connect to a supported location, obtain the assigned port, enter it under Tools > Options > Connection, disable a different port on each startup, and keep the VPN session active.

A VPN is relevant when reachability or an ISP network path is the problem. It cannot create seeds, supply a missing 0.1%, repair permissions, or add disk space. A VPN without an explicitly assigned incoming port also does not improve unsolicited inbound reachability.

Check Seeds, Peers, Availability, and Trackers First

When one torrent stalls but others work, the swarm is the most likely cause. These four indicators answer different questions.

Seeds

A seed has 100% of the content, but an advertised seed is not necessarily connected, online, or accepting you.

Peers

Peers may have only the same pieces you already have. Many peers do not guarantee that the missing piece exists.

Availability

Below 1.000 means the currently known swarm does not expose one complete copy. A 99.9% download can wait indefinitely for a missing piece.

Trackers

The Trackers tab shows whether peer announcements succeed. DHT, PeX, and Local Peer Discovery may still find peers when a public torrent permits them.

The fastest control test

Start one current, legal, well-seeded download such as a Linux distribution. If it transfers, qBittorrent, the basic network path, and storage are working; focus on the original torrent instead of changing every setting.

How to Fix qBittorrent Stalled

Run these checks in order and stop when the control torrent works. Changing several settings at once hides the real cause.

1

Test one known healthy torrent

Use a legal torrent with active seeds. If it downloads, the stalled item probably has poor availability, private-tracker restrictions, or no useful seed. If every torrent stalls, continue.

2

Read the swarm, not just the status word

Check active seed connections, availability, peers, and the General tab. At 99.9%, availability below 1.000 is decisive: no local setting can manufacture the missing piece.

3

Refresh peer discovery

Open the Trackers tab and look for errors. Use Force Reannounce once after restoring the connection. For public torrents, confirm DHT and PeX are enabled; obey private-tracker rules.

4

Check queue and speed limits

Review maximum active downloads, uploads, and torrents under BitTorrent settings. Check the turtle alternative-speed icon and global limits. Force Resume only helps when queueing is the actual blocker.

5

Verify disk space, path, and permissions

Confirm the destination drive is mounted, writable, and has room for the remaining data plus temporary files. On macOS, Windows, Docker, or a NAS, verify that qBittorrent still has access to the configured path.

6

Repair a broken VPN interface binding

Open Tools > Options > Advanced > Network interface. If qBittorrent is bound to a VPN adapter that no longer exists, reconnect that adapter or select the current one. Keep a deliberate binding if you rely on it to prevent traffic leaks.

7

Check the firewall and listening port

Allow qBittorrent on the active network profile. Match Port used for incoming connections to the router-forwarded or VPN-assigned port. Better incoming reachability can expand the peer pool, but an open port cannot fix zero seeds or missing pieces.

8

Recheck data only when the evidence points to files

Use Force Recheck after a crash, moved files, hash failures, or a 99.9% item with sufficient availability. It rereads local data and can take time; it is not a routine network repair.

Use the whole pattern—not one status word—to choose the next check.

Does Port Forwarding Stop qBittorrent from Stalling?

Port forwarding lets peers initiate a connection to qBittorrent. That can increase the set of reachable peers, improve seeding, and help a marginal swarm where neither side can accept incoming traffic. It is not required for every download because qBittorrent can initiate outbound connections, and it cannot fix a torrent with no seed, availability below 1.000, or a local file error.

If your router owns a public IPv4 address, forward qBittorrent's single TCP and UDP listening port to the computer. If the ISP uses CGNAT, the router rule stops at the ISP and you need public IPv4 or a VPN that supplies an incoming port.

qBittorrent Stalled FAQ

What does Stalled mean in qBittorrent?

It means qBittorrent is ready to transfer but has no useful peer connection at that moment. StalledDL is a download state; StalledUP is a seeding state.

How do I fix qBittorrent Stalled?

Test a healthy torrent, check seeds and availability, inspect trackers, verify queue and speed limits, confirm disk access, check VPN interface binding, then verify the firewall and listening port. Stop when the control torrent works.

Why is my qBittorrent download stalled at 0%?

The swarm may have no reachable seed or no available first piece. Check active seeds, Availability, and Trackers. If a healthy torrent downloads, the original swarm is the problem.

What does Stalled Uploading mean in qBittorrent?

The completed torrent is ready to seed, but no connected peer currently requests data you have. It is often normal when demand is low.

Why does qBittorrent show Stalled at 100%?

At 100%, StalledUP usually means there is nobody to upload to. Keep the torrent available and the listening port reachable if you want to seed.

Why is qBittorrent stalled at 99.9%?

The final piece may be absent from the connected swarm. If Availability is below 1.000, wait for a complete seed. If it is at least 1.000, check hash errors, disk space, and use Force Recheck once.

Why is qBittorrent stalled even with seeds?

Displayed seed counts can be tracker estimates rather than active connections. Seeds may be offline, busy, unreachable, or no longer announced accurately. Compare a healthy torrent and check Trackers.

Why does qBittorrent stall when my VPN is on?

qBittorrent may be bound to an inactive VPN interface, the kill switch may block traffic, or the provider-assigned port may have changed. Verify the active adapter and current incoming port.

Does Force Resume fix qBittorrent Stalled?

Only when torrent queueing is the blocker. Force Resume ignores queue limits; it cannot create a seed, restore a missing VPN adapter, or fix disk and firewall errors.

Do I need port forwarding for qBittorrent?

qBittorrent can download through outbound connections without forwarding, but a reachable listening port lets more peers initiate connections and usually improves peer reachability and seeding. Use one router-forwarded or VPN-assigned port.
