qBittorrent With PIA: Port Forwarding, Binding and Best Settings

Set up qBittorrent with Private Internet Access: request a port, enter it as the listening port, bind to PIA’s adapter, fix firewalled status, and automate it in Docker.

Quick Answer

In the PIA app, turn on Request Port Forwarding and connect to a supported location outside the US. Enter the port it shows as qBittorrent’s listening port, then choose PIA’s adapter under Tools → Options → Advanced → Network interface. Turn on the kill switch, and confirm that transfers stop when PIA disconnects. The port can change, so check it first if you turn firewalled.

To use qBittorrent with PIA, turn on Request Port Forwarding, connect to a supported location outside the US, enter the assigned port as qBittorrent’s listening port, and bind qBittorrent to the PIA network adapter. Without binding, a dropped tunnel can let transfers carry on over your home IP.

The port that PIA gives you can change, so a setup that worked yesterday can turn firewalled today. Check the number first when that happens. If you’d rather not manage this by hand, the Docker section shows how to automate it.

Windows, macOS and Linux

qBittorrent PIA Setup: 6 Steps

  1. 1. Connect PIA to a port-forwarding location

In the PIA desktop app, open Settings → Network and turn on Request Port Forwarding. Connect to a supported location outside the US.

No VPN yet? Compare PIA and Proton
  2. 2. Copy the forwarded port

The app shows the assigned port under your VPN IP address. PIA assigns the number automatically, so you can’t pick it.

  3. 3. Enter the port in qBittorrent

Go to Tools → Options → Connection. Enter the port as the listening port, and untick the random port option and UPnP / NAT-PMP.

  4. 4. Bind qBittorrent to the PIA adapter

Go to Tools → Options → Advanced → Network interface and choose PIA’s adapter. With WireGuard it’s often named wgpia0. If you’re unsure, compare the list with PIA on and off, then pick the adapter that appears.

  5. 5. Turn on PIA’s kill switch

Use the VPN Kill Switch setting in the app, so traffic can’t leave on your normal connection if the tunnel drops.

  6. 6. Restart and test

Restart qBittorrent. Look for the green plug icon at the bottom of the window. Then disconnect PIA and confirm that transfers stop.

Best qBittorrent Settings for PIA

  • Listening port: PIA’s current forwarded port.
  • UPnP / NAT-PMP: off, because your router isn’t part of this path.
  • Network interface: PIA’s adapter, not “Any interface”.
  • DHT, PeX and Local Peer Discovery: on for public torrents, off for private trackers that require it.
  • Proxy: not needed while the VPN is on. Use one or the other unless you have a specific reason.

PIA, or Proton VPN for qBittorrent?

Both give one automatically assigned port. The main difference is location: PIA doesn’t forward ports on US locations, so US users usually end up on a Canadian IP. Proton has 400+ US servers, and its forwarded port works on the ones marked for P2P. On either VPN, the port can change.

Request a port in the app

Private Internet Access

A straightforward fit if you’re following this guide: one setting requests the port, and the app shows it beside your VPN IP.
  • Port forwarding on supported non-US locations
  • P2P allowed on its network
  • VPN kill switch in the desktop app
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
Forwarded port on US P2P servers

Proton VPN

Choose this if you want a forwarded port on a US IP, which PIA doesn’t offer. Our qBittorrent Proton VPN guide covers the setup, including automatic port updates on Linux.
  • 400+ US servers, with P2P servers marked ⇄ on paid plans
  • One forwarded port, usually new on each reconnect
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Whichever you choose, repeat the test in step 6. Binding is what stops transfers when the VPN drops. For wider safety steps, read how to torrent safely.

qBittorrent and PIA in Docker

Run qBittorrent inside the network of a VPN container such as Gluetun, so its traffic can’t leave outside the tunnel. Gluetun can request PIA’s port, and a small script or a companion container can pass it to qBittorrent whenever it changes. That saves you from copying the port by hand.

qBittorrent PIA FAQ

Connect PIA with port forwarding on, enter the assigned port in qBittorrent, select PIA’s network adapter under Advanced, and turn on the kill switch. Then test that transfers stop when you disconnect.

Go to Tools, Options, Advanced and set Network interface to PIA’s adapter. With WireGuard it’s often named wgpia0. Adapter names vary, so compare the list with PIA connected and disconnected if you’re not sure.
