qBittorrent Connection Status Firewalled: Fix It

A yellow firewalled status can appear while downloads still work. Check incoming peer reachability on your home, VPN, or Docker connection.

Connection Indicator: Yellow Firewalled
Essential Rule

qBittorrent connection status firewalled means the client has not detected an incoming peer connection. You can still download and upload through connections you initiate. Check the listening port, active route, and incoming peers before assuming your firewall is blocking the app.

The yellow icon tells you less than you think

qBittorrent Status Bar ObservationObserved State
DHT: 342 nodesPeers: 48Seeds: 19DL: 5.4 MB/sUP: 1.2 MB/s
Connection Status: Firewalled

You have a working download, a yellow flame, and conflicting advice about opening ports. That is a common combination. The icon describes observed connectivity, not a diagnosis of the Windows firewall, router, or VPN.

In qBittorrent’s status-bar code, a listening client without an incoming connection is shown as firewalled. A listening failure is a different state: offline. A green indicator means an incoming connection has been observed; it does not prove you configured a permanent port-forwarding rule. The project’s icon discussion also explains why older versions and themes look different.

If transfers are healthy and you only want the icon to turn green, start with verification. If seeding is weak or small swarms cannot reach you, a reachable incoming port is a useful goal. It can improve peer reachability, but it cannot create seeds or guarantee faster downloads.

Prove which connection is missing

For qBittorrent firewalled but downloading, check the path below before buying a different VPN. Keep qBittorrent running with a well-seeded legal torrent, such as a Linux distribution, so there is real peer activity.

Three observations, three different conclusions
ObservationWhat it establishesNext check
Downloads and uploads workPeer data transfers work; this alone does not show who initiated the connection.Look for incoming peers, not just transfer speed.
External TCP port test succeedsA listener is reachable at that IP and port at test time.Confirm it is the qBittorrent route and check peer activity.
Peers tab shows the I flagThat peer connected to you.Repeat after a VPN reconnect to check the new mapping.
01

Read the listening port. In Options or Preferences → Connection, copy “Port used for incoming connections.” The Web UI port is separate.

02

Identify the public entrance. With a VPN, test the VPN exit IP used by qBittorrent. Without a VPN, test your ISP public IP. A browser outside the torrent tunnel can report the wrong IP.

03

Test while the listener is running. Use an external TCP port checker against that exact IP and port. A failed test can be caused by a wrong address, missing listener, expired lease, NAT, or a firewall. It does not identify which one.

04

Check the Peers tab. The I flag marks an incoming connection; D and U describe downloading and uploading. Wait for activity; an idle client’s icon is weak evidence. A TCP-only checker also says nothing definitive about UDP.

If a healthy torrent works but your original torrent is stalled, follow the qBittorrent stalled guide. For “qBittorrent no direct connections,” use the same inbound checks. A tracker failure, empty swarm, or stale VPN binding needs a different fix from a missing forwarded port.

Fix the desktop path without rebuilding your setup

Windows: check the active firewall profile

Windows Defender

For qBittorrent connection status firewalled on Windows, allow the actual qBittorrent executable and its incoming TCP/UDP traffic on the network profile your connection uses. A Private-only rule will not help a tunnel classified as Public, and the reverse is also true.

A qBittorrent 5.0.4 user report traced an unreachable port to rules enabled for Public while the active network was Private. Check the rule’s profile and application path after an update. Keep the firewall enabled; changing the relevant app rule is more targeted.

Mac and Ubuntu: separate the app rule from the network route

macOS & Linux

For qBittorrent connection status firewalled on Mac, check the application firewall and any third-party network filter. On Ubuntu or another Linux desktop, check the host firewall’s incoming rule for the configured port and protocol. Then check whether the listening socket is actually on the route you intend to use.

How to bind VPN to qBittorrent

Leak Prevention

Options or Preferences → Advanced → Network interface should select the active VPN adapter. Follow the official VPN binding guide; adapter names differ by OS and VPN. If everything stopped after a reconnect or app update, reselect the current adapter. Do not switch a VPN-only setup to “Any interface” just to make transfers start.

To bind qBittorrent to ProtonVPN, choose the adapter for the protocol you actually connected with. A stale OpenVPN adapter will not carry a new WireGuard session. In Gluetun, inspect the interface inside the container; a desktop adapter name does not apply there.

Which port is best for qBittorrent?

Port Allocation

There is no universal fastest port. On a VPN, use its assigned active port rather than picking a random number. On a home router, choose an unused allowed port and keep the router rule and listener consistent. Turn off randomizing the listening port on startup when you rely on a fixed mapping.

No VPN: forward at the router only if you control the public entrance

Router & NAT

How to port forward qBittorrent: choose a fixed listening port, reserve the device’s LAN address, and forward that TCP/UDP port to the same device. UPnP/NAT-PMP can automate a mapping on a compatible home router; manual forwarding gives you an explicit rule to inspect.

If your router is behind another router, both layers need a route. If the ISP uses CGNAT, a rule on your own router cannot open the ISP’s shared public address. Use our CGNAT port-forwarding guide to distinguish those cases. An ISP public-IP option or a VPN with inbound forwarding may be simpler than maintaining a relay server.

qBittorrent connection status firewalled on Unraid or Docker

For qBittorrent firewalled with Gluetun, trace the shared VPN network rather than repeatedly changing the NAS router. Publishing a Docker port on your host does not create an incoming mapping at the VPN provider.

01

Confirm the namespace. In a Compose stack, network_mode: "service:gluetun" puts qBittorrent on Gluetun’s route. Unraid templates and other VPN containers have different controls. Verify the torrent client’s exit IP inside its actual network context.

02

Read the current forwarded port. Get it from the provider or Gluetun’s successful forwarding log/file. Do not copy the WireGuard server endpoint port: that connects the tunnel and is not your torrent listening port.

03

Match the application. Set qBittorrent to the assigned port and inspect its listening interface. Keep the Web UI management port separate and private.

04

Handle reconnections. If the provider changes its assigned port, sync the new value to qBittorrent. After recreating Gluetun, verify dependent containers still share the active namespace. A “VPN healthy” log alone does not prove the torrent listener is reachable.

For qBittorrent firewalled with ProtonVPN in a container, start with the port lease and listener match before replacing the VPN. The Gluetun forwarding documentation lists ProtonVPN among its native integrations and does not include PureVPN, making Proton the documented path for this container workflow. Follow our Gluetun port-forwarding walkthrough for the wider Docker setup.

Inbound Reachability Fix

When a port-forwarding VPN solves the actual problem

A VPN is useful here when you want a reachable torrent listener behind CGNAT, cannot change a shared router, or already use a VPN whose exit does not offer incoming forwarding. The benefit is a public entrance you can configure without asking your ISP or apartment’s network administrator.

If your search is qBittorrent connection status firewalled with NordVPN or Mullvad, check the provider’s current forwarding policy before changing local router rules. VPN support for torrent downloads does not automatically include inbound port forwarding. Our qBittorrent and NordVPN guide explains that distinction.

Featured Solution: Native Port Forwarding
1 Active Port Included

Proton VPN: one torrent listener, fewer router chores

For a desktop user who wants incoming peers without managing a router or VPS, Proton’s paid port-forwarding feature is a practical fit. qBittorrent normally needs one listening port number; an assigned port can carry its TCP and UDP traffic. More forwarded port numbers do not make a single torrent client faster.

1

Install the app, enable port forwarding, and connect to a P2P-capable server.

2

Copy its active port into qBittorrent → Connection. Disable qBittorrent’s “Use UPnP/NAT-PMP port forwarding from my router” for this VPN path.

3

Bind qBittorrent to the active VPN interface, then verify incoming connectivity. Recheck the port after reconnecting.

Proton documents the feature on paid Windows, macOS, and Linux apps; macOS is currently early access. Router/manual and Linux CLI setups involve additional steps. Moderate NAT can help some gaming connections, but Proton says it is incompatible with port forwarding. It is not the fix to enable alongside forwarding for qBittorrent.

Alternative: Multi-Port & Game Servers
Configurable Add-on

PureVPN: when this device also hosts games or services

If your device also runs a game server or you need several chosen public ports, PureVPN’s paid port-forwarding add-on fits that broader job. Its activation guide offers selected-port controls and an “Enable all ports” mode. These set the VPN’s incoming policy; your service must still listen and its local firewall must allow the traffic. For qBittorrent alone, open the specific listening port you need; all-port access adds no torrent-specific benefit.

That makes PureVPN more relevant to someone maintaining a torrent client plus a hosted game room or local service than to someone worried about one yellow icon. If another service requires a stable address, assess the dedicated-IP option separately. Keep authentication on exposed services and do not forward the qBittorrent Web UI to the internet.

Include the paid add-on, then use Member Area → Subscriptions → Configure → Enable specific ports, enter your listening port, and apply the settings before connecting to a PF-supported location. The linked instructions do not specify a complete current protocol matrix; confirm forwarding for your chosen protocol and server with PureVPN. Router and container setups need their own verified configuration.

Your fix should survive the next reconnect

Before calling the job done, reconnect the VPN once. An unchanged port number does not establish that its forwarding lease is still active. A changed number must be reflected in qBittorrent.

Verification Protocol Checklist
0 of 4 verified
  • Current VPN exit IP verified on the torrent route
  • Active forwarded port matches qBittorrent
  • Listener remains on the intended interface
  • Incoming peer or external reachability rechecked

If these pass but the target torrent is still slow, investigate swarm health and upload limits. You have already established the network path; another port-forwarding purchase is unlikely to solve a torrent with no available seed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions that come up during the fix

What does qBittorrent connection status firewalled mean?

It means qBittorrent has not detected an incoming peer connection on its current route. A closed listening port is one possible cause, but the indicator alone does not prove that a firewall is blocking traffic. Check the active route, test the actual listening port, and look for incoming peers.

Why is my qBittorrent connection not working?

First separate a yellow connection indicator from a torrent that cannot transfer. Test a healthy torrent and check tracker errors, the selected network interface, and the active VPN connection. If outbound transfers work but incoming connections fail, check the listener, firewall, and router or VPN port mapping.

Does qBittorrent use TCP or UDP?

It supports TCP and uTP peer connections; uTP runs over UDP. UDP is also used for DHT and UDP trackers. For a normal TCP and uTP setup, forward and allow both TCP and UDP on the listening port when your router or VPN supports them. A TCP port checker does not test UDP reachability.

How to check if qBittorrent is bound to VPN?

Open Tools > Options > Advanced > Network interface and confirm it selects the active VPN adapter rather than Any interface. On macOS, use qBittorrent Settings or Preferences. Test with a legal download: disconnect the VPN and confirm qBittorrent traffic stops, then reconnect the same interface. This checks binding, not port forwarding.

Why does qBittorrent still download when it is firewalled?

Your client can initiate an outbound connection to a reachable peer and exchange data over it, including uploading. Incoming port forwarding lets other peers initiate connections to you. A firewalled indicator can therefore coexist with working downloads and uploads, while limiting which peers can connect.

How do I fix qBittorrent connection status firewalled on Unraid?

Identify whether qBittorrent uses the Unraid host, a Docker bridge, or a VPN container network. Match the peer listening port and TCP/UDP rules on that route. With Gluetun, confirm VPN forwarding is active and update qBittorrent to its assigned port. Publishing the WebUI port does not open the peer listening port.

Why is qBittorrent firewalled on Proton VPN even though the port has not changed?

An unchanged number does not prove that forwarding is active. Confirm Proton shows an active forwarded port on the current connection, copy it into qBittorrent, and disable qBittorrent router UPnP/NAT-PMP. Recheck the bound interface and local firewall. Keep qBittorrent running while testing the VPN exit IP and that port.

What does qBittorrent “No direct connections” mean?

It is the connection indicator wording used for the state often described as firewalled. It concerns incoming connectivity, not whether a torrent has seeds or whether the VPN protects your traffic. Verify an incoming peer connection or test the listening port on the correct public route before changing settings.

Do I really need a VPN for qBittorrent?

A VPN is optional. It can replace the public IP that peers see with the VPN exit IP. For fixing incoming reachability, first configure your existing home route or VPN plan. Consider a forwarding-capable VPN when CGNAT blocks your home route or your current VPN cannot provide the incoming port you need.
