Xfinity Static IP: Residential vs Comcast Business, and How to Get a Fixed IP

Xfinity residential plans have no static IP; Comcast Business sells it as an add-on. How to give a device a fixed local IP on your Xfinity gateway, and how to get a fixed public IP without a business plan.

Quick Answer

No. Xfinity residential internet uses a dynamic public IP, and static IPs are only sold with Comcast Business plans (the add-on was $19.95 a month in a 2021 quote, on top of business service). If you just need one device to keep the same local address for port forwarding, use the Xfinity app, which ties the rule to the device, or reserve the address on your own router. For a fixed public address on a home plan, use a VPN dedicated IP with port forwarding, or dynamic DNS for a free name that follows your IP.

Xfinity does not offer static IP addresses on residential plans. Home service uses a dynamic public IP assigned by DHCP. Static IPs are a Comcast Business add-on, sold on top of a business internet plan; in a 2021 quote the add-on was $19.95 a month, business class only.

That said, many people searching “Xfinity static IP” want something simpler: a fixed local IP for one device on their Xfinity network, so port forwarding keeps working. That is free. And if you need a fixed public address without switching to Business, a VPN dedicated IP with port forwarding or dynamic DNS will do. All three are below.

Public Static IP vs Local Static IP on Xfinity

Public static IP

The address the internet sees. Needed when others must always reach you at the same number: servers, cameras, allowlists. Residential Xfinity cannot have one.

Local static IP

A fixed 10.0.0.x address for one device inside your home. Needed so a port forward or camera link keeps pointing at the right device. Free on any Xfinity gateway.

How to Give a Device a Fixed IP on Xfinity

  1. 1

Use the Xfinity app for port forwards

In the app, go to WiFi → View WiFi equipment → Advanced settings → Port forwarding. Xfinity attaches the rule to the device you pick, which keeps it working without a manual address.

  2. 2

Leave the device on automatic (DHCP)

Xfinity’s app only lists devices that get their address from the gateway. Do not type a manual IP on the device, or it can disappear from the list.

  3. 3

Need an exact address? Use the gateway admin page or your own router

Some xFi gateways still offer DHCP reservations at 10.0.0.1 (sign in with the admin password). If yours does not, put the gateway in bridge mode and reserve addresses on your own router.

  4. 4

    Restart the device

Reconnect or reboot the device so it picks up the reserved address, then confirm it in the device list.

Xfinity’s residential IP is dynamic but tends to stay the same for long stretches, changing after outages, equipment swaps or long disconnections. Dynamic DNS keeps a name pointed at it for free, which suits Plex or a home server, but it cannot satisfy an allowlist that wants one exact number and it breaks the day you move or change ISP (DuckDNS, Dynu). When you need an exact number that survives outages, moves and ISP changes, a VPN dedicated IP does it for a fraction of a Business plan.

Xfinity Static IP FAQ

Not on residential plans. Static IPs are a Comcast Business add-on, so you need a business internet plan and a monthly IP fee.

Dynamic. Your gateway receives its public IP by DHCP. It often stays the same for weeks or months, but it can change after outages, equipment swaps or long disconnections, so do not rely on it for anything that needs a fixed number.

Comcast does not publish current static IP prices; ask Comcast Business sales for a quote for your address.
