Reddit “You’ve Been Blocked by Network Security”: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Reddit says “You’ve been blocked by network security. To continue, log in to your Reddit account or use your developer token”? Who gets blocked (VPN, Private Relay, work Wi-Fi), the free fixes, and how to use Reddit on a VPN without the block.

Quick Answer

Reddit shows this when you are logged out and it does not trust your IP address, usually a VPN, proxy, iCloud Private Relay, work or school network, or cloud server. Log in and it goes away, even on a VPN. To read logged out, turn the VPN off for Reddit, switch server or try mobile data. Scripts need an OAuth token. If you keep a VPN on all the time, use a dedicated IP that only you use.

Reddit shows “You’ve been blocked by network security” when you are logged out and it does not trust your IP address. That usually means a VPN, a proxy, iCloud Private Relay, a work or school network, or a cloud server.

The fastest fix is the one on the page: log in. If you want to read Reddit logged out, turn the VPN off for Reddit or switch server. If you keep a VPN on all day, the reliable fix is a dedicated IP that only you use. Reddit has no help page for this block, but its Data API rules say it plainly: traffic not using OAuth or login credentials will be blocked.

What you see

The Reddit Block Messages and What They Mean

MessageWhereMeaning
“You’ve been blocked by network security. To continue, log in to your Reddit account or use your developer token.”reddit.com in a browser, logged outReddit does not trust the IP address you are coming from
“Your request has been blocked due to a network policy.”Older and alternate wording users reportSame block

Reports spiked in January and February 2026, when searches for the message jumped about eightfold. The block targets the address, not your account: the same laptop loads Reddit fine on home Wi-Fi and gets blocked on the VPN.

Who Gets Blocked and Why

  • VPN or proxy users: Thousands of people share each server address, and some of them scrape Reddit.
  • iCloud Private Relay, browser VPNs: Traffic exits from shared relay addresses.
  • Office, school and university networks: Many users behind one address, sometimes a cloud security proxy.
  • Cloud servers, scripts and bots: Datacenter addresses without a login or OAuth token.

Not using any of these? Check whether your antivirus or browser has a built-in VPN switched on. Netflix shows the same kind of block for shared addresses; see the Netflix proxy error guide.

How to Fix It for Free

The block page offers it, and it works with or without a VPN. AdGuard tested this and saw no blocks while logged in.

Send Reddit outside the VPN

Use split tunneling to exclude your browser or reddit.com, or disconnect while you read.

Switch VPN server

Some servers are not blocked. In AdGuard’s test, most of its locations loaded Reddit logged out. Expect to keep switching.

Turn off Private Relay

On iPhone and Mac: Settings → your name → iCloud → Private Relay. Then reload Reddit.

Try mobile data

If Reddit loads on mobile data, the Wi-Fi network is blocked. On work or school networks, log in or ask IT.

Developers: use a token

Scripts should authenticate with OAuth through Reddit’s Data API instead of scraping pages anonymously.

Logging in solves it for most people. If you read Reddit logged out on purpose, or a work VPN must stay on, server-hopping turns into a daily chore: an address that works today can be blocked tomorrow.

Stay on the VPN

Use Reddit on a VPN Without the Block: Dedicated IP

Reddit blocks shared VPN addresses because a few users on them abuse the site. A dedicated IP is an address only you use, so you are no longer judged by what strangers do on it. You keep the VPN’s encryption and stop hopping servers.

Neither provider names Reddit, and Reddit does not publish which addresses it blocks. A dedicated IP removes the main reason shared addresses get blocked; it cannot promise Reddit never flags a VPN range. Both refund windows give you time to test.

Troubleshooting

Still Blocked?

Blocked even when logged in

Clear Reddit cookies, log in again and check the account is not suspended or locked.

Blocked without any VPN

Look for a VPN built into antivirus software, a browser VPN, Private Relay, or a work security proxy on the device.

Blocked on the dedicated IP

Make sure the app connected to the dedicated server, not a shared one, then clear Reddit cookies and reload.

Only old.reddit.com fails

Log in on www.reddit.com first, then open old.reddit.com in the same browser.

Reddit Network Security Block FAQ

Reddit does not trust the IP address your request came from and will not serve pages to it while you are logged out. It asks you to log in or use a developer token. Your account is not banned.

Something else is sharing or hiding your address: iCloud Private Relay, a VPN built into your antivirus or browser, or a work, school or university network. Try mobile data; if Reddit loads there, the network is the cause.
