Proton VPN Free Countries: All 10 Free Server Locations and Limits

Proton VPN Free now covers 10 countries, not 5, but it picks the server at random. The full list, how to change server, the cooldown, and what Free can’t do.

Quick Answer

Proton VPN Free has servers in 10 countries: the US, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Norway, Switzerland, Japan and Singapore. Proton picks the server at random, so you can’t choose a country. Changing server has a cooldown of 45 seconds, then 10 minutes. A paid plan lets you pick from 140+ countries.

Proton VPN Free has servers in 10 countries: the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Norway, Switzerland, Japan and Singapore. You can’t choose between them. Proton picks the server at random, so a free plan won’t reliably give you the country a site or service needs.

Older articles, and one of Proton’s own blog posts, still say five countries. That count was out of date once Proton added five more in October 2025.

Why you may read “five countries”: Proton’s 11,000-servers post still lists the first five. Its plans page and pricing page both say 10. Proton’s October 28, 2025 roadmap explains the change and says the new countries work “on most platforms”.

How to Change Server on Proton VPN Free

Free users can’t change country. They can ask for another random server, and a cooldown limits how often. After the first change you wait 45 seconds. After that you wait 10 minutes between changes.

  1. Windows, macOS, iPhone and iPad: open the Countries tab and choose Change server.
  2. Android: open the Home tab and choose Change server.
  3. Check the country shown in the app. If it’s the wrong one, wait for the countdown and try again.

Pick Any Country With Proton VPN Plus

On Free, every wrong country can cost you another 10 minutes, and a UK or German IP is never available. If you need a set location, the free plan will keep getting in the way. Plus lets you select the country yourself.

Troubleshooting

Proton Free Server Problems

The Change server button is greyed out

The cooldown is still running. It starts at 45 seconds for the first change and then runs 10 minutes between changes. Wait for the countdown to finish.

You got the wrong country

Free can’t target a country. Pressing Change server again gives another random server, so reaching one country can take several cooldowns. Paid plans let you pick it directly.

A site blocks the free server

Try Change server once. Free servers are shared by many people, and a site that rejects VPN addresses may reject the next one too. Proton’s paid plans give you far more servers to try.

You see fewer countries than this list

Proton said the five new countries reached “most platforms”, without naming the exceptions. Update the app first. If the list is still short, your platform may be one of the exceptions.
