NordVPN SOCKS5 Not Working? Current Servers & Setup
Find current NordVPN SOCKS5 server hosts, configure qBittorrent with the right credentials, verify routing, and fix authentication or “end of file” errors.
Quick Answer: Use Service Credentials and a Current Host
NordVPN SOCKS5 still works. For a reliable setup, choose a current socks.nordhold.net host, enter port 1080, enable authentication, and use the service username and password from your Nord Account—not your normal sign-in. SOCKS5 changes traffic for the configured app but does not encrypt it. If privacy is the priority, use the full NordVPN app instead of SOCKS5 alone.
Wrong credentials
Your Nord Account email and password are not SOCKS5 credentials. Generate or reveal the separate service credentials.
Old proxy hostname
Replace retired addresses with a current socks.nordhold.net regional or city hostname on port 1080.
Proxy-only protection
SOCKS5 routes only the app you configure and adds no encryption. Use the VPN app when you need a protected tunnel.
NordVPN SOCKS5 configuration checker
Choose the result you need, your client, a nearby region, and whether service credentials are ready. The exact route and values update immediately.

Service credentials
Configure the app with SOCKS5
First open Nord Account → NordVPN → Set up NordVPN manually and reveal the service credentials. Then enter the values below in qBittorrent → Settings → Connection.
- Proxy type
- SOCKS5
- Server
- nl.socks.nordhold.net
- Port
- 1080
- Authentication
- Service credentials
This checker runs entirely in your browser. It does not ask for, test, transmit, or store your proxy username or password.
Current NordVPN SOCKS5 server list
These city hostnames appeared in NordVPN’s current setup documentation when this guide was checked in July 2026. Start with the nearest regional hostname in the checker; use a city hostname only when you need a fixed location.

| Netherlands | amsterdam.nl.socks.nordhold.net | 1080 |
| Sweden | stockholm.se.socks.nordhold.net | 1080 |

How to set up NordVPN SOCKS5 in qBittorrent
Configure one layer at a time. Confirm qBittorrent works normally before adding the proxy, then verify the routed IP before trusting the setup.
- 1
Get NordVPN service credentials
In Nord Account, open NordVPN and the manual setup area, then reveal or copy the service username and password. Do not use your account email.
- 2
Open qBittorrent Connection settings
Open Tools → Options → Connection on Windows or qBittorrent → Preferences → Connection on macOS.
- 3
Enter the SOCKS5 server
Set Type to SOCKS5, enter a current socks.nordhold.net hostname, set Port to 1080, and enable use of the proxy for peer connections.
- 4
Enable authentication
Turn on Authentication and paste the service username and password. Avoid leading spaces or a trailing line break.
- 5
Apply and restart qBittorrent
Save the settings, close the client completely, and reopen it. This clears connections created before the proxy was active.
- 6
Verify the torrent-facing IP
Use a legal torrent IP-check magnet and confirm the reported address differs from your normal public IP. A browser IP check alone does not prove qBittorrent is proxied.
NordVPN SOCKS5 proxy vs the VPN app
Choose by protection scope, not by which option feels faster. The proxy is for selective app routing; the VPN app is the safe default for privacy.
| Decision | SOCKS5 proxy | NordVPN app |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic covered | Only the configured app | The device or selected split-tunnel apps |
| Encryption | None added by SOCKS5 | Encrypted VPN tunnel |
| Protection after a drop | Depends on the client’s proxy behavior | Kill Switch can block fallback traffic |
| Overhead | Usually lower, but route quality still matters | Encryption overhead with broader protection |
| Best fit | One compatible app needs a different IP | Privacy, public Wi-Fi, browsing, or leak control |
SOCKS5 is a standardized proxy protocol for relaying TCP and UDP applications; encryption is outside the protocol. Read IETF RFC 1928
Choose the VPN route that matches the job
NordVPN is the direct fit for this setup. Proton VPN is included only as a deliberate encrypted-app alternative, while PIA is the next direct authenticated SOCKS5 option.

Fix NordVPN SOCKS5 not working
Match the visible symptom before changing settings. Randomly switching servers can hide an authentication or client-routing mistake.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Focused fix |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication failed or password prompt | Normal Nord Account sign-in, old service credentials, or copied whitespace | Reveal fresh service credentials, paste them once, and remove any spaces before or after each value. |
| Proxy error: “end of file” | Retired host, interrupted proxy session, or rejected authentication | Use a current socks.nordhold.net host, re-enter service credentials, restart the client, then try the nearest alternate region. |
| Peers stay at 0 or connection times out | Proxy peer connections disabled, blocked port 1080, or an unhealthy torrent | Enable proxying for peer connections, test a known legal torrent, and compare another network before changing the client. |
| Torrent check shows the normal IP | Proxy applies only to some connection types or the client ignored unsaved settings | Enable proxying for peer and tracker connections where available, apply, restart, and repeat a torrent-facing IP test. |
| The proxy works but downloads are slow | Distant region, weak swarm, ISP filtering, or excess client limits | Choose the closest listed region and compare the same legal torrent without the proxy. Keep only the change that improves the measured route. |
