eMule Low ID: A Clear Fix for Router, CGNAT & VPN
eMule Low ID means the ED2K server cannot reach your incoming TCP port. Downloads can still work, but fewer peers can connect to you directly.

Check these before choosing a route
eMule ports: start with the client and firewall
Read your actual TCP and UDP ports
Open Options → Connection → Client ports. Copy both numbers; your version may label this Preferences.

These are familiar defaults, not required values. Use your client’s settings. Leave the optional web-management port out.
aMule port forwarding: one extra check
aMule’s project FAQ also lists server UDP at TCP+3: TCP 4662 means server UDP 4665. Record your build’s ports. On a NAS or container, configure the host running the client, including its firewall and container port mappings.
Fix eMule Low ID on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app. Select the current emule.exe and the network profile marked active.
If using advanced or third-party rules, match incoming TCP/UDP and the active profile. Keep the firewall enabled; no DMZ is needed. Microsoft’s rule guide.
Test once before changing forwarding: keep eMule running and use Options → Connection → Test Ports. If TCP passes, skip to confirming High ID. If it fails, follow the connection you use below.
Choose the route carrying eMule traffic
Using a VPN for eMule? Take the VPN route. Otherwise, start with your home router; skip to shared access if you cannot manage it.
eMule Low ID port forwarding on your router
In the router’s connected-device list, find the computer running eMule and reserve its LAN IP using DHCP reservation. Under Port Forwarding / Virtual Server, send your TCP and UDP ports to that IP. Keep each external and internal port equal.
If UPnP already created matching rules, keep them; do not add duplicates. Save your changes and retest. If TCP still fails with the correct rules, check the upstream connection below.
If the router path is blocked
eMule Low ID behind CGNAT
Your router may sit behind another router or the ISP’s shared address system (CGNAT). A rule on your own router cannot open that upstream layer.
Without router access: ask the network administrator to forward your ports. If that is unavailable, a VPN with port forwarding may provide an alternative.
Have router access? Check for an upstream layer
Find WAN / Internet IPv4 on the router’s status page. Compare it with your public IPv4 on the same home connection. Use a device whose browser is not going through a VPN or proxy for this ISP check.
- WAN is 100.64–100.127.x.x
- Shared address space: ask the ISP for public IPv4 with inbound access. RFC 6598.
- Two routers you control
- Map both layers or resolve double NAT.
- Private or different WAN IP
- Follow the CGNAT check to identify the extra layer. A mismatch alone does not prove CGNAT.
- Same public IPv4
- This comparison does not indicate upstream NAT. Use the rule and listener checks to isolate the remaining failure.
After the administrator or ISP changes access, retest. If they cannot provide inbound access, consider the VPN route below.
Wind, Orange/Livebox or Freebox?
Use the same address check above. The ISP or router brand alone does not establish whether you have CGNAT.
For an existing VPN or blocked ISP access
How does eMule work with a VPN?
Peers connect to the VPN’s forwarded port. A home router rule cannot open that exit. If your ISP path already works, you do not need a VPN for High ID.
Set up your current provider first
Match eMule’s ports to your provider’s TCP/UDP mappings. For the two providers below:
PureVPN: Member Area → Port Forwarding → enable specific ports → apply → connect to a supported location. Enter your client’s TCP/UDP ports in the forwarding rules.
Proton VPN: Disable Moderate NAT, enable forwarding on a supported P2P connection, and copy the assigned port. If your client accepts that number for both TCP and UDP, enter it in both fields. Update eMule if the number changes after reconnecting. aMule/Gluetun setups may need additional ports.
Apply the settings, then verify the result before considering a different provider.
NordVPN eMule Low ID: why it persists
NordVPN does not offer port forwarding. P2P support alone cannot open an incoming port; changing home-router rules will not fix that VPN limitation.

eMule port test failed? Check these results
Apply changed settings and restart eMule if prompted. Keep it running during Options → Connection → Test Ports.
Make sure the test targets eMule’s connection
Use the current client ports and the public IP carrying eMule traffic: your home public IPv4 or, when using a VPN, its exit IP. If the browser takes a different route, its detected IP may be wrong. Use a checker with a target-IP field, or a browser on eMule’s route.
TCP fails
Confirm the test target above. On a home connection, use the listener and rule checks, then investigate upstream NAT if local settings match. On a VPN, confirm the current port assignment and supported connection with your provider.
TCP passes, but ED2K still shows Low ID
Reconnect to the ED2K server so it checks the port again. Still Low ID? Try another known working server; a busy or misconfigured server can report Low ID.
ED2K reports High ID
The ED2K issue is resolved. If you also use Kad, check its status below; otherwise, stop changing ports.
eMule Kad firewalled even with High ID?
If ED2K already has High ID, leave its TCP rules alone. Kad uses your client’s UDP port; if both networks are blocked, complete the common setup first.
- In Options → Connection, confirm UDP is enabled and note its port.
- Allow that UDP port through the computer’s firewall and match it in the router or VPN carrying eMule traffic.
- In Kad, use Recheck Firewall if available. Open is the result you want.
Disconnected is a different state: connect Kad, bootstrapping from known clients if needed, before judging firewall status. If it remains firewalled, confirm your router or VPN actually forwards UDP; a TCP pass cannot prove this.
High ID and, if used, Kad Open? Port troubleshooting is complete. A download still waiting may be queued or lack an available source; more port changes will not fix that.
Still blocked after the matching checks?
Save your client version, ports, test target and results in the checklist. Send an upstream block to your ISP, a missing VPN mapping to the VPN provider, or a port-test/status mismatch with server logs to client support. If neither connection supports inbound access, Low ID may remain; downloads can still work.
Keep a record of what worked
Save ports and results; recheck any VPN-assigned port after reconnecting.

How do I fix eMule Low ID?
Match the client, firewall and forwarding rules, then test with eMule running. Behind CGNAT, you also need a reachable public entrance.
Is there an eMule Low ID hack?
No. Changing an ID or enabling protocol obfuscation cannot create an inbound mapping. Fix reachability; the server assigns the ID.
What does waiting mean in eMule?
Usually, a source or upload slot is unavailable. High ID cannot bring an offline source back or bypass its queue.
Why isn't eMule connecting to my server?
Check the log and try a known working server. A disconnected session is different from Low ID; port changes cannot revive an offline server.
How do I fix Synology eMule Low ID?
If Download Station supports eMule, use its TCP/UDP settings and forward to the NAS IP. Check the NAS firewall, container mappings if applicable, and upstream NAT.
Does anyone still use eMule?
Yes; recent community discussions describe active setups, but do not establish a user count. Use the official project and share files you are permitted to distribute.
