Eero VPN Not Supported? Device & Whole-Home Setup

Eero cannot run a normal VPN client on the mesh itself. Choose the working device-level or upstream-router setup and avoid bridge-mode and double-NAT mistakes.

Quick Answer: Put the VPN on Devices or an Upstream Router

You cannot install a standard VPN client directly on an eero router. For the quickest reliable setup, install NordVPN on each phone, computer, or streaming device and leave eero unchanged—VPN passthrough already allows those connections. To protect every device, place a VPN-capable router before eero and switch the eero network to bridge mode. Eero Plus Guardian is also device-level protection, not a network-wide eero VPN.

No VPN client on eero

The eero interface has no place to import an OpenVPN or WireGuard profile, so a normal VPN subscription cannot run on the mesh gateway.

Device VPNs pass through

A VPN app on a phone, computer, TV, or work device can create its tunnel through eero without router-side installation.

Whole-home needs two routers

A VPN-capable upstream router creates the tunnel; eero then supplies mesh Wi-Fi in bridge mode.

Choose what you need to protect and which router currently faces the internet. The planner returns one concrete layout instead of asking you to try incompatible settings.

Install the VPN app on each protected device

Keep eero as the router. Install the provider app on every device that needs a different public IP or encrypted tunnel, connect there, and verify that device. No eero port forward or custom DNS is required.

Does eero support VPN? What actually works

The word “support” covers four different jobs. Only one of them runs on the eero system itself, and even that option protects individual devices rather than the mesh.

VPN jobEero statusWhat it means
Import a commercial VPN profileNot supportedThere is no OpenVPN, WireGuard, or third-party VPN client configuration in the eero app.
VPN passthroughSupportedA tunnel created by a connected device can pass through eero. Passthrough does not protect other devices by itself.
Eero Plus Guardian VPNUp to five supported devicesSubscribers install Guardian on supported phones, tablets, or computers. It does not turn the eero gateway into a VPN router.
Network-wide VPNRequires another routerA separate VPN-capable router must create the tunnel before traffic reaches the bridged eero mesh.

How to use a VPN on eero-connected devices

This is the dependable route for most homes because it preserves eero features and lets each device choose when the tunnel is active.

1

Install the provider app

Install the VPN only from the device’s official app store or the provider account. Sign in on each phone, computer, or TV that needs protection.

2

Connect on the device

Choose a nearby server for the best starting speed. Leave eero port forwarding, reservations, and DNS unchanged.

3

Verify that exact device

Check its public IP, open the required service, and test after sleep or Wi-Fi roaming. Another device’s result does not verify this tunnel.

How to set up a whole-home VPN with eero

Use this layout only when TVs, consoles, or smart-home devices cannot run their own VPN apps. The upstream router performs encryption and routing; eero remains the Wi-Fi mesh.

Internet or modem

Public connection enters here

VPN-capable router

Creates the tunnel and performs NAT

Eero in bridge mode

Provides mesh Wi-Fi without a second NAT

  1. 1

Choose a router that can run a VPN client

Confirm that its current firmware can import the provider’s OpenVPN or WireGuard profile. A “VPN passthrough” label alone is not enough.

  2. 2

    Wire the upstream router first

Connect modem or internet handoff → VPN router WAN, then VPN router LAN → gateway eero. Restart the modem if it remembers the old router.

  3. 3

Connect the VPN on the upstream router

Import the provider profile, use the manual service credentials when required, and confirm a wired device exits through the VPN before changing eero.

  4. 4

Switch the eero network to bridge mode

Bridge mode prevents a second routing layer. Features that depend on eero routing may become unavailable, so review the app before applying the change.

  5. 5

    Test routing, DNS, and fallback

Check one eero-connected device, disconnect the upstream tunnel, and confirm whether traffic stops or returns to the normal ISP route as intended.

Best VPN choices for an eero network

These services fit the device-app route and can also supply manual profiles for a compatible upstream router. Eero itself still does not host the VPN connection.

Fix eero VPN, bridge mode, and passthrough problems

Match the failure to the layer that owns it. Eero cannot repair a rejected provider login, and the VPN app cannot remove a second router layer.

SymptomLikely causeFocused fix
Eero will not connect after bridge modeWrong cabling, upstream DHCP failure, or modem still bound to the previous gatewayProve the upstream router works by cable, reconnect the gateway eero to its LAN, then power-cycle the modem and routers in order.
Games or inbound services report double NATBoth the upstream VPN router and eero are routingUse bridge mode on eero so only the upstream router performs NAT. Do not add duplicate port forwards as a first fix.
A work VPN connects elsewhere but not through eeroLocal DNS, filtering, stale device state, or a network-specific policyRestart the work device and gateway, compare a phone hotspot, then give that result to the work administrator or eero support.
SmartDNS changes nothing on the TVIt was entered on the wrong device, the service uses hard-coded DNS, or the public IP was not registeredConfigure the supported TV or streaming device directly and follow the provider’s current IP-registration steps. Use a VPN-capable upstream router when encryption is required.
